Overview

Tour Details

Ethiopia and Somaliland combiIt will provide the opportunity for you to get to know Ethiopia and Somaliland, two countries that have long been stigmatized in the media with a negative image of poverty and famine.

Ethiopia and Somaliland have endured civil wars in the past, but they remain untouched gems on the African continent, due to the fact that they contain a wealth of history, wildlife, and architectural wonders.

We begin our tour in Ethiopia’s capital city of Addis Ababa, where we will learn about the country’s history and culture. As well as exploring the markets of Dire Dawa and the UNESCO site of Harar, we will take the opportunity to explore the old city walls of the city. In Somaliland, we will visit the caves at Las Geel and Berbera, a coastal resort where you can eat fresh fish and unwind on a completely deserted beach.

Itinerary

Day 1:Arrive in Addis Ababa

When you arrive in Addis Ababa, you will be met by our driver who will take you to your hotel. The rest of the day is at your leisure. (D)

Day 2:Tour of Addis Ababa

We will visit Addis Ababa for the whole day after breakfast. Our first stop is the National Museum, where we will see, among many other historical relics, Lucy, the world’s oldest humanoid skeleton, dating back 3 million years. Our next stop is St George’s Cathedral, followed by lunch and a taste of Ethiopian coffee – arguably one of the finest you will ever taste.

On our way back to the Red Terror Martyrs Museum after lunch, we will stop at the Holy Trinity Cathedral to see the tomb of Hailie Selassie. You will hear moving firsthand accounts of the bloodshed, torture, and mass killings committed by the military junta of The Derg at the end of the 1970s. Leisurely evening. (BLD)

Day 3:Addis - Dire Dawe

Prepare for a 5:30 departure to Dire Dawa by minibus early in the morning. For lunch, stop midway through the journey at a local roadside restaurant. Arrive in Dire Dawe around 15:30 and check into our hotel. The rest of the day can be spent relaxing in the pool or taking a stroll around the city. (BLD)

Day 4:Dire Dawe - Harar

After breakfast, we will tour the Dire Dawa Railway Museum. There is not much left of this extraordinary site, which is only partly still in use. The station was built over a century ago and has hardly changed in all that time. The original French-built machinery is mostly still in place and in use. Following that, we visit the spice, khat, and camel markets. Enjoy watching the locals sat in the sun, chewing their khat without a care in the world and breathing in the overpowering smell of dried chillies being crushed into powder to sell on in the markets.

We will then stop at a local restaurant for lunch before taking a private minibus to Harar. An hour later, we will check into the assigned hotel. The remainder of the day can be spent at leisure with the option to feed wild hyenas in the evening! (BLD)

Day 5:Harar City

After breakfast, we explore Harar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will see colourfully dressed local women, wild eagles circling the butcher shops, and khat being processed into a tea paste. Additionally, we will visit Sheikh Abadir’s tomb, the Arthur Rimbaud Centre, City Gates, Ras Tafari’s house, Ras Makonnen’s Palace, and the Jamia mosque. Spend the evening at leisure, with the option to attend a local bar or club. (BLD)

Day 6:Harar - Hargeisa

Our journey to the Somaliland border takes three hours by private minibus after breakfast. Our Somali guides pick us up at the border and take us along desert roads for a two hour drive to Hargeisa, the capital city of Somalia. Arrive at our hotel in the center of Hargeisa and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. (BLD)

Day 7:Hargeisa

Our first stop after breakfast is the livestock market where we see hundreds of camels and other livestock being traded. After lunch, we take a tour of the city center where we see the moneychangers with their piles of Somaliland shillings, the bazaar, Central mosque, and the MIG monument.

We visit the twin hills of Naasa Hasblood, just outside Hargeisa, in the afternoon. It is possible to see wildlife along the way, such as tortoises, baboons, and the rare beira antelope – which is native to the region. As we trek up the twin hills, we’ll be able to see spectacular views of the Somaliland desert. Back at the bottom, we will pass through a baboon’s nest that has a pungent smell (if vacant). Return to the hotel and spend the rest of the evening at leisure. (BLD)

Day 8:Hargeisa - Laas Geel - Berbera

We depart at 8 am after breakfast and travel 60 km north to the cave paintings of Laas Geel. These paintings date from 9000BC to 3000BC. The paintings were discovered by a French archaeological team in 2002 and are some of the best preserved in the world.

After lunch, we drive on to Berbera, a coastal city on the coast. In Berbera, we will view some of the English and Russian colonial architecture. We will then head to the seafront to see the bombed and abandoned ships that remain from the Somali civil war. Afterwards, we’ll check into our hotel, which is located on a deserted beach where dolphins and turtles are regularly spotted. We’ll have the evening to ourselves. (BLD)

Day 9: Berbera - Sheikh - Hargeisa

After breakfast, spend some time in Berbera. Drive to the small town of Sheikh in the mountains, stop for tea, and walk around. Discover the ruins of Ferdusa, a 16th-century city. Return to Hargeisa in time for the last supper! (BLD)

Day 10:Departure

Transfer to the airport and tour ends. (B)
