Overview

Tour Details

One of the most memorable trips to the Horn of Africa is when you combine a trip to Mogadishu with visits to Somaliland, Djibouti, and Sudan. By booking these four countries together with us, you are able to save more money than if you booked them separately.

Somaliland is not yet a country. Despite more than thirty years of de facto independence, Somaliland remains an exciting nation filled with a fascinating history and nomadic culture. In addition, Djibouti is among the smallest nations in Africa, possibly the most strategic country on earth for its location in the red sea.

Imagine exploring Mogadishu. It is no secret that Somalia (Mogadishu) has been off limits to tourists for many years. An ancient Chinese and Italian architecture can be observed in this area.

A very interesting part of the story of Sudan is the story of the Kingdom of Kush, a story that begins at the beginning and ends at the end. There are many pyramids in Sudan that symbolize the rich culture of the country.

Itinerary

Day 1:Arrival in Mogadishu

Pick up at the airport and our guide will assist you with obtaining your visa on arrival and take you to your Shamo hotel for a briefing. Afterward, you will go on an orientation then time to relax and to swim at Lido beach, come back to the hotel and overnight at Shamo hotel. (D)

Day 2:Mogadishu

Start the day with a visit to the fish market after breakfast. Mogadishu’s fish market is one of the most photogenic places in the city. During the morning hours it comes alive with activity. Take a look at the old harbor. It is the oldest port in Somalia. Visit Mogadishu’s iconic lighthouse, which was reconstructed during the Italian colonial era. While it is no longer operational, it remains an important symbol of Mogadishu’s maritime heritage. While the staircases were deliberately damaged during the Civil War, if you are brave enough to climb to the top, the view over the bay is definitely worth it.

Lunch at a local Somali restaurant. You will have the opportunity to taste some traditional Somali cuisine. You will visit bazaars and malls called Mogdishu Mall. Take a stroll through the shopping areas to gain an understanding of everyday life in Somalia. The SYL Monument is also worth visiting. SYL (Somali Youth League) was the first political party in Somalia. In the 1940s, it played a key role in bringing the nation to independence. From the 1950s till the 1960s. Every year in Somalia, the Somali Youth League commemorates its founding on May 15, 1943.

Monument at Dhagaxtuur. The monument symbolizes the struggle for independence from colonial rule. You can visit the Union Mosque. This is one of the largest religious sites in the Horn of Africa, with a capacity of over 10,000 people, and is also known as the mosque of Islamic solidarity and peace. Dinner and overnight at Shamo hotel. (BLD)

Day 3:Mogadishu - Hargeisa

Upon arrival in Hargeisa, you will be taken to your hotel. We will provide a walking tour of the city center if there is sufficient time. Depending on your arrival time in Hargeisa, if you arrive in the morning you will have a full day of city sightseeing, but if you arrive in the evening you will only have dinner at local restaurants. Overnight at the Damal Hotel. (BLD)

Day 4:Hargeisa - Laasgeel - Hargeisa

Visit the caves of Laas Geel, where rock art dating back more than 5,000 years has been found – one of the most well-preserved examples of rock art in Africa, and a highlight of the journey. A French team led by Xavier Gutherz discovered the site in 2002 during their study of the origins of pastoralism in the Horn of Africa. Along with the paintings, lithic tools were found scattered throughout the site, and there are many tombs marked with stelae and mounds in the nearby area.

There are approximately 20 rock shelters with paintings, the largest of which measures approximately 10 meters in length. Most of them appear to be humpless cows with curved or lyre-like white horns (sometimes with reddish tips) and marked udders. We will return to Hargeisa city and visit the nearby Camel farm after visiting the site. Dinner and overnight at Damal Hotel Hargeisa or a similar hotel. (BLD)

Day 5:Hargeisa - Djibouti

Upon arrival in Djibouti, transfer to your hotel. Due to your arrival time, you may have time to explore the capital or stay and relax in the hotel. Overnight Menelik hotel or similar.  (BLD)

Day 6:Djibouti - Lake Assal - Djibouti

After breakfast, we then drive to Lake Assal, the lowest point in Africa. On our way, we also visit the Panoramic view of Canyon Adaleh and the Panoramic view of Goubet. In Lake Assal, the big salt field makes you feel like walking in nowhere land. The water has bright colors that change from time to time because of the sun’s reflection. The trip ends with a drive back to Djibouti City and overnight Menelik hotel or similar hotels. (BLD)

Day 7: Djibouti - Khartoum (Sudan)

Arrive in Khartoum and transfer to your hotel. Depending on when you arrive there may be time to explore the capital. Overnight Acropole Hotel in Khartoum. (BD)

Day 8:Khartoum city Tour

A cultural tour of Khartoum after breakfast. First we visit the Archaeological Museum (temples and coeloms from the outside), which has an interesting collection of archaeological artifacts and full temples reconstructed here after being moved from the north by Assuan Dam (The Museum is currently closed, we may be able to see the temples in the outside Garden).

During our visit to Omdurman, you will witness a very special religious ceremony that takes place near the Sudanese capital Khartoum, in the Omdurman region, every Friday (except during Ramadan). We will also visit the old capital of Sudan, where we will view the Mahdi’s tomb from outside. In addition, we will visit the Khalifa’s House Museum, a museum from the Mahdiya period closed for maintenance. Lunch at Assaha restaurant. In the afternoon, enjoy a boat ride to the Al Mogran Confluence, a geographical highlight in Africa. From Lake Victoria, we can see the fast and narrow Blue Nile stretching to Ethiopia joining the wide and lazy White Nile. Overnight Acropole Hotel in Khartoum (BLD)

Day 9:Khartoum - Meroe

The first thing to do in the morning is to drive to Meroe. This ancient city is located along the Nile and contains Nubian ruins. The Pyramids of Meroe will also be visible along with the Lion Temple of Naqa and Musawwarat es-Sufra. The camp is the perfect place to spend the night.

The Meroe Tented Camp is located in Bagarwyia, about 230 km. north of Khartoum, overlooking the stunning pyramids of Meroe. The accommodation consists of 22 tents (4×4 m), tastefully furnished. There is a private bathroom hut with a shower and toilet for each guest. There are 3.5 kilometers between the Camp and the Royal Necropolis. The tents are equipped with a veranda with two comfortable chairs to relax in front of the astonishing view of more than forty pyramids. A generator produces electricity for the tents until 11:00 p.m. Guests have access to a restaurant. An Italian manager oversees the camp with the help of Sudanese staff who are well-trained. Even those hesitant to sacrifice comfort will be able to visit this arid region of extraordinary archaeological interest and beautiful landscapes thanks to this permanent facility. (BLD)

Day 10:Meroe - Depart from Khartoum

Start your day with a tour of Meroe, also known as Nubia. Located in the Nile River Valley, the city was one of the earliest civilizations to develop. You will return to Khartoum, where you will board your flight. (B)
