Explore the Horn of Africa, the country of camels, and the lost caves of Laas Geel, as well as godforsaken Mogadishu. We will begin in Hargeisa Somalia and finish in Mogadishu Somalia! The In-depth Cultural Tour of Somaliland and Somalia – A Tour Back In Time, includes a 6 day tour of Hargeisa with Laas Geel and Berbera, followed by the capital of Somalia, Mogadishu.
Somaliland is a country that does not exist. The nation of Somaliland has been de facto independent for more than twenty years. However, the country is still unrecognized by the international community, despite its fascinating history and a rich nomadic culture. Our tailor-made holidays and group tours to Somaliland offer the chance to visit a country which couldn’t be further from the tourist trail, and which is in many ways one of the last true frontiers of Africa.
Somalia was once a major tourist destination. Maybe, with a bit of luck and a running wind, it can become one. However, the country remains unsafe for foreigners for the time being since its people, its places, and its infrastructure are still in the process of recovering from a brutal civil war that lasted for over 30 years. The city began receiving tourists in 2012, however the number of visitors has been low so far, and Visit Horn Africa has continued to send tourists since 2012. There are increasing signs of hope, and Mogadishu, the capital, is experiencing a boom thanks to massive investments made by Somalis returning to their homeland.
Arrive in Hargeisa and transfer to your hotel. If you arrive in Hargeisa in the a.m. and if time permits, you will spend the afternoon exploring the city and seeing its sights, including the War Memorial with its unusual monument of a crashed MiG fighter aircraft and the markets, which include the gold and camel markets. However, if you arrive in Hargeisa late, you will need to relax at your hotel. Stay at the Damal Hotel or a similar hotel. (D)
Visit the caves of Laas Geel, where rock art dating back more than 5,000 years has been found – one of the most well-preserved examples of rock art in Africa, and a highlight of the journey. A French team led by Xavier Gutherz discovered the site in 2002 during their study of the origins of pastoralism in the Horn of Africa. Along with the paintings, lithic tools were found scattered throughout the site, and there are many tombs marked with stelae and mounds in the nearby area.
There are approximately 20 rock shelters with paintings, the largest of which measures approximately 10 meters in length. Most of them appear to be humpless cows with curved or lyre-like white horns (sometimes with reddish tips) and marked udders. We will return to Hargeisa city and visit the nearby Camel farm after visiting the site. Dinner and overnight at Damal Hotel Hargeisa or a similar hotel. (BLD)
Once you have been picked up at the airport, you will be assisted in obtaining your visa by our guide upon arrival. Then, you will proceed to your hotel for a briefing in Shamo. The next thing you’ll do is attend an orientation, then you’ll have time to relax and swim at Lido Beach. Then you’ll finish the day by returning to the hotel and sleeping at the Shamo Hotel. (BLD)
Start the day with a visit to the fish market after breakfast. Mogadishu’s fish market is one of the most photogenic places in the city. During the morning hours it comes alive with activity. Take a look at the old harbor. It is the oldest port in Somalia. Visit Mogadishu’s iconic lighthouse, which was reconstructed during the Italian colonial era. While it is no longer operational, it remains an important symbol of Mogadishu’s maritime heritage. While the staircases were deliberately damaged during the Civil War, if you are brave enough to climb to the top, the view over the bay is definitely worth it.
Lunch at a local Somali restaurant. You will have the opportunity to taste some traditional Somali cuisine. You will visit bazaars and malls called Mogdishu Mall. Take a stroll through the shopping areas to gain an understanding of everyday life in Somalia. The SYL Monument is also worth visiting. SYL (Somali Youth League) was the first political party in Somalia. In the 1940s, it played a key role in bringing the nation to independence. From the 1950s till the 1960s. Every year in Somalia, the Somali Youth League commemorates its founding on May 15, 1943.
Monument at Dhagaxtuur. The monument symbolizes the struggle for independence from colonial rule. You can visit the Union Mosque. This is one of the largest religious sites in the Horn of Africa, with a capacity of over 10,000 people, and is also known as the mosque of Islamic solidarity and peace. Dinner and overnight at Shamo hotel. (BLD)
