Itinerary

Day 1Laas Geel - Hargeisa

Pick up from Airport or from hotel and travel to Laas Geel. Arrive at Laas Geel, one of the most important archaeological discoveries in the Horn of Africa.

Accompanied by a trained local guide, you will walk through a series of rock shelters adorned with remarkably preserved prehistoric paintings.

Highlights of Laas Geel

  • Over 20 decorated rock shelters

  • Paintings estimated to be 5,000–9,000 years old

  • Vivid depictions of cattle, human figures, ritual scenes, and animals

  • Unique horned cows symbolizing early pastoral culture

  • Exceptional preservation due to natural shelter and isolation

Your guide will explain the historical significance, symbolism, and how Laas Geel remained undiscovered until 2002, making it one of the world’s most recent major rock art discoveries.

Time at Site: About 1.5–2 hours

Drive Back to Hargeisa

After completing the guided visit, you will return to Hargeisa. Short photo stops can be made upon request.

Lunch at a Local Restaurant

Lunch is served at a carefully selected local restaurant in Hargeisa. This is an opportunity to enjoy traditional Somali flavors while discussing culture, history, and daily life with your guide.

Typical meals include:

  • Grilled meat or chicken

  • Rice or pasta

  • Fresh vegetables and salads

  • Somali tea or fresh juice

Guided Hargeisa City Tour

Hargeisa Central Market

Explore the city’s main market, a lively hub where locals trade food, textiles, spices, electronics, and household goods. This is the best place to observe everyday life and commerce in Somaliland.

Currency Exchange Street

Visit the famous money exchange area, where large stacks of Somaliland shillings are exchanged daily. Your guide will explain how the local economy functions and how Somaliland operates without international recognition.

War Memorial (MiG Jet Monument)

Stop at Hargeisa’s iconic war memorial, featuring a fighter jet mounted on a pedestal. This site commemorates Somaliland’s struggle and resilience and provides important context to the country’s modern history.

Tour Notes

Somaliland Visa Information

Somaliland visas are available on arrival for all nationalities at Hargeisa International Airport or Berbera Airport only. To obtain the visa on arrival, you will require an invitation letter, which we will provide.

If you enter Somaliland by land borders, such as Togwajale (from Ethiopia) or Lawyacado (from Djibouti), a pre-approved visa is required. This visa can be obtained through Somaliland embassies or arranged through us, and the processing time is approximately 5 working days.

Please also note that since the Somalia Federal Government launched the Somalia eVisa system (etas.gov.so), some airlines may not allow passengers to board flights to Hargeisa from Dubai or Addis Ababa without a Somalia eVisa.
Although the Somalia eVisa is not applicable to Somaliland and is not accepted by Somaliland authorities, some airlines require it solely for boarding purposes.

We can assist you in obtaining the Somalia eVisa if required for airline compliance. Please note that the Somalia eVisa does not replace the Somaliland visa and is only used to facilitate flight boarding to Somaliland.

Is Somaliland Safe?

Yes — Somaliland is safe, welcoming, and stable, especially when traveled responsibly.

The escort requirement outside Hargeisa is a standard local regulation, not a warning sign. When understood correctly, it adds structure and reassurance rather than limitation.

For travelers seeking authentic experiences, untold stories, and genuine human connection, Somaliland offers something rare — a destination where safety and hospitality coexist naturally.

As always, travelers should conduct their own research, ask questions, and travel in a way that aligns with their comfort and expectations. For more reading please read this article in a detailed way – Is Somaliland Safe to Travel.
