What to Expect

Hargeisa and Laas Geel Tour:

Hargeisa is the political, cultural, and economic heart of Somaliland. A city tour typically includes:

  • Central Market (local goods, spices, and daily life)
  • Livestock Market (one of the largest in the Horn of Africa)
  • Cultural and historical landmarks
  • Interaction with local communities

This city tour provides essential context before or after visiting Laas Geel.

Laas Geel is one of the most significant prehistoric rock art sites in Africa, dating back approximately 5,000–9,000 years. The caves feature:
  • Vivid paintings of cattle, humans, and wild animals
  • Exceptional preservation
  • Protected access with official site guards

Located about 50 km from Hargeisa, Laas Geel is easily accessible as a half-day excursion.

Tour Notes

Somaliland Visa Information

Somaliland visas are available on arrival for all nationalities at Hargeisa International Airport or Berbera Airport only. To obtain the visa on arrival, you will require an invitation letter, which we will provide.

If you enter Somaliland by land borders, such as Togwajale (from Ethiopia) or Lawyacado (from Djibouti), a pre-approved visa is required. This visa can be obtained through Somaliland embassies or arranged through us, and the processing time is approximately 5 working days.

Please also note that since the Somalia Federal Government launched the Somalia eVisa system (etas.gov.so), some airlines may not allow passengers to board flights to Hargeisa from Dubai or Addis Ababa without a Somalia eVisa.
Although the Somalia eVisa is not applicable to Somaliland and is not accepted by Somaliland authorities, some airlines require it solely for boarding purposes.

We can assist you in obtaining the Somalia eVisa if required for airline compliance. Please note that the Somalia eVisa does not replace the Somaliland visa and is only used to facilitate flight boarding to Somaliland.

Important Notice:
This information is accurate as of January 2026 and is subject to change at any time. For the most up-to-date visa requirements, please contact us at info@visithornafrica.com.

Is Somaliland Safe?

Yes — Somaliland is safe, welcoming, and stable, especially when traveled responsibly.

The escort requirement outside Hargeisa is a standard local regulation, not a warning sign. When understood correctly, it adds structure and reassurance rather than limitation.

For travelers seeking authentic experiences, untold stories, and genuine human connection, Somaliland offers something rare — a destination where safety and hospitality coexist naturally.

As always, travelers should conduct their own research, ask questions, and travel in a way that aligns with their comfort and expectations. For more reading please read this article in a detailed way – Is Somaliland Safe to Travel.
