Overview

Tour Details

In contrast to Somalia, which is synonymous with war, anarchy, and acts of piracy on the high seas, Somaliland represents a very different scenario. The country declared independence from the rest of the war-torn nation in 1991, and has prospered, avoiding the violence that engulfs its neighbors to the south.

I can assure you that the intrepid outsider who comes here will find a delightful country that has enduring ties to its colonial past as British Somaliland, and will feel thoroughly rewarded after exploring the fascinating historical sites and ruins of the nation.

There are many things to see and do here, from some of the most significant Neolithic rock art caves on the African continent. These include Laas Geel and Dhagah Kure, to explore Somaliland’s capital city of Hargeisa, the ruins of Ferusa, and admiring the once splendid architecture of Berbera’s ancient port.

Itinerary

Day 1:Arrival in Hargeisa

Upon arrival in Hargeisa, you will be taken to your hotel. We will provide a walking tour of the city center if there is sufficient time. Depending on your arrival time in Hargeisa, if you arrive in the morning you will have a full day of city sightseeing, but if you arrive in the evening you will only have dinner at local restaurants. Overnight at the Damal Hotel or similar hotels.

Day 2:Hargeisa - Laasgeel - Airport

Early morning visit camel market before travel the caves of Laas Geel, where rock art dating back more than 5,000 years has been found – one of the most well-preserved examples of rock art in Africa, and a highlight of the journey. A French team led by Xavier Gutherz discovered the site in 2002 during their study of the origins of pastoralism in the Horn of Africa. Along with the paintings, lithic tools were found scattered throughout the site, and there are many tombs marked with stelae and mounds in the nearby area.

There are approximately 20 rock shelters with paintings, the largest of which measures approximately 10 meters in length. Most of them appear to be humpless cows with curved or lyre-like white horns (sometimes with reddish tips) and marked udders. After returning to Hargeisa city, we will have lunch at a local restaurant and then transfer to the airport in order to catch an Ethiopian Airlines flight at 5:40 pm. (B)
