In contrast to Somalia, which is synonymous with war, anarchy, and acts of piracy on the high seas, Somaliland represents a very different scenario. The country declared independence from the rest of the war-torn nation in 1991, and has prospered, avoiding the violence that engulfs its neighbors to the south.
I can assure you that the intrepid outsider who comes here will find a delightful country that has enduring ties to its colonial past as British Somaliland, and will feel thoroughly rewarded after exploring the fascinating historical sites and ruins of the nation.
There are many things to see and do here, from some of the most significant Neolithic rock art caves on the African continent. These include Laas Geel and Dhagah Kure, to explore Somaliland’s capital city of Hargeisa, the ruins of Ferusa, and admiring the once splendid architecture of Berbera’s ancient port.
Your 6 day tour in Somaliland starts with your arrival in Hargeisa, the capital city. After checking in at your hotel, if time permits you can spend the day exploring the city’s vibrant markets and busy streets.
One of the must-visit spots in Hargeisa is the livestock market, where you can see camels, goats, and sheep being traded in a bustling atmosphere. Overnight in Hargeisa at Damal hotel or similar.
Visit the caves of Las Geel in the morning, where rock art dating back 5,000 years has been discovered – one of the best-preserved examples in all of Africa. Next, visit Ga’an Libah, a tall limestone ridge that rises to an elevation of 1,720 meters, representing the diversity of Somaliland.
It is known as ‘lion’s paw’, and despite the fact that lions are no longer present here, this well-watered region is still home to a variety of wildlife such as kudu, hyena, gazelles, baboons, and leopards. Ga’an Libah is situated at the top of an escarpment and receives more rainfall than most of the country. Many parts of the town are thick with trees and the birdlife is also quite good. We will take part in a full day of sightseeing and overnight in a community guest house, and we will share a meal with the community residents. Overnight in Ga’an libah at the community cottages.
When you wake up in the morning, you will have the opportunity to explore Ga’an libah national park in Somaliland for an hour before traveling to Berbera, the most important port city in the region.
Our next stop is Berbera, a city along the coast with interesting architecture dating back to both the Ottoman and the British periods. After lunch in Berbera, you have the option of sightseeing in the city or visiting Bataale beach where you can swim and take a beach walking tour. Overnight in Berbera at Damal Hotel or similar.
Today, you’ll explore the region around Berbera, drive to the small town of Sheikh in the mountains, stop for some tea, walk around and enjoy the pleasant climate. Visit the ruins of Ferdusa – a 16th-century city.
The town is known for its many ancient tombs, some of which date back to the 13th century. After Sheikh, you’ll head back to Hargeisa, stopping along the way to admire the stunning scenery and take some memorable photos. Overnight in Hargeisa at Damal hotel or similar.
In this full-day excursion towards the western region of the country, you will have the opportunity to visit Arabsiyo, Gabiley, and Dhagah Koure, which is an archeological site of rock art founded around 5000 BC. Dhagah Khoure is also worth a visit if you wish to experience something a bit different from Las Geel.
There is no doubt that this is not as impressive as Las Geel, but it is still worth visiting. Once you have visited the Western side of the country, return to Hargeisa and experience the nightlife there. Overnight in Hargeisa at the Damal Hotel or similar.
Your 6 day tour in Somaliland comes to an end on day seven, with your departure from Hargeisa. Depending on your flight schedule.
