Join us for a truly off the beaten path experience in Somaliland and Djibouti, two of the world’s least visited places.
Our journey begins in the former French colony of Somalia, which is now known as Djibouti. Djibouti might be small, but it has some of the world’s most spectacular scenery. Our tour will include its two most famous lakes, Lac Abbe and Lac Assal, which due to their salt and sulphur composition produce some incredible and highly photogenic views.
Continuing our journey through greater Somalia, we now turn our attention to Somaliland, a self-declared republic that formerly served as a British protectorate. The de-facto state declared independence from the rest of Somalia in 1991. However, no international organizations have recognized its sovereignty.
The region has been recovering from a brutal civil war, but it is very safe today, and the locals are very welcoming to foreign visitors. Somaliland differs fundamentally from other countries in the region – and almost anywhere else in the world. We will take you to see ancient cave art! It is one of the oldest cave paintings in Africa.
As soon as you land in Djibouti city, our team will be there to pick you up and take you to your hotel. Relax for a while and get ready for a city tour of Djibouti if time permits according to your arrival time.
Visit the bustling markets, taste the local delicacies, and witness the vibrant culture of the city. In the evening, head back to your hotel and rest for the night at Ras Dika hotel or similar.
After breakfast, we will start our journey to the mesmerizing Lake Assal. The lake is located 120 km west of Djibouti city and is known for its turquoise waters and the mesmerizing landscapes surrounding it. Lake Assal is the lowest point in Africa, once we reach the lake, you can walk on the shore or take a dip in the salty waters. You can also have a picnic lunch with an incredible view.
After spending some time at Lake Assal, we will head back to Djibouti city to explore its famous attractions. We will visit the Central Market, the Presidential Palace, and the famous Hamoudi Mosque. You will also have some time to walk around the city and explore its culture and tradition. Overnight in Djibouti city at Ras Dika hotel or similar.
When you arrive in Hargeisa at noon from Djibouti city, you will be taken to your hotel. At16:30 we will conduct a walking tour of the Hargeisa city center and you will also witness how locals conduct business and how money is exchanged in Hargeisa. Overnight in Hargeisa at Damal hotel or similar.
After breakfast, you’ll leave Hargeisa for a day trip to Laas Geel, a complex of caves and rock shelters that feature some of the most impressive Neolithic rock art in Africa. The paintings depict wild animals, ancient pastoralists, and other scenes from prehistoric times. From Laas Geel, you’ll head to the coastal city of Berbera, upon arrival, visit a historical Ottoman Mosque and Ottoman houses. Late lunch was served at an Ottoman house.
Take a short boat trip to go hunt for shipwrecks in the Gulf of Aden. Relax and swim at an untouched beach, where local youth and families come and enjoy their downtime. (Due to local culture, ladies will need to cover their bodies while in water.) Tour the historic town of Berbera in the early evening, where you will find more Ottoman, Persian, and British architecture of historic interest. This will be a great chance for some amazing photographs at sunset. Overnight in Berbera at Damal hotel or similar.
Today, you’ll explore the region around Berbera, drive to the small town of Sheikh in the mountains, stop for some tea, walk around and enjoy the pleasant climate. Visit the ruins of Ferdusa – a 16th-century city.
The town is known for its many ancient tombs, some of which date back to the 13th century. After Sheikh, you’ll head back to Hargeisa, stopping along the way to admire the stunning scenery and take some memorable photos. Overnight in Hargeisa at Damal hotel or similar.
