Overview

Tour Details

It is particularly interesting to visit Djibouti, Somaliland, and South Sudan in the Horn of Africa and Eas Africa combined. Somaliland, which does not exist, and Djibouti, one of the smallest countries on the continent. South Sudan is the newest nation in Africa.

Our journey begins in the former French colony of Somalia, now known as Djibouti. Despite being a very small country, Djibouti has some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world. Lac Abbe and Lac Assal are two of the most picturesque lakes in the region due to their salt and sulfur content.

As a final point, we will have been able to visit not one, but two ethnic groups in South Sudan. It will be an amazing experience to meet warm local tribes and to see some of the most incredible things that most foreigners have never seen before.

Itinerary

Day 1:Arrival in Djibouti

Upon arrival in Djibouti City, a small country located in the Horn of Africa. You will be transferred to your hotel, where you can relax and unwind after your journey. Depending on your arrival time, you may want to explore the city and its vibrant markets and cafes. Overnight in Djibouti at Ras Dika hotel or similar.

Day 2:Djibouti city - Lac Assal - Djibouti city

After breakfast, we then drive to Lake Assal, the lowest point in Africa. On our way, we also visited the Panoramic view of Canyon Adaleh and the Panoramic view of Goubet. In Lake Assal, the big salt field makes you feel like walking in nowhere land. The water has bright colours that change from time to time because of the sun’s reflection. The trip ends with a drive back to Djibouti City. Overnight Ras Dika hotel or similar.

Day 3:DJIBOUTI - HARGEISA

When you arrive in Hargeisa at noon from Djibouti city, you will be taken to your hotel. At16:30 we will conduct a walking tour of the Hargeisa city center and you will also witness how locals conduct business and how money is exchanged in Hargeisa. Overnight in Hargeisa at Damal hotel or similar.

Day 4:HARGEISA - LAASGEEL - HARGEISA

A highlight of the journey is the visit to the caves of Laas Geel, where rock art dating back more than 5,000 years has been found – one of the most well-preserved examples of rock art in Africa. The site was discovered in 2002 by a French team led by Xavier Gutherz during their study of the origins of pastoralism in the Horn of Africa. In addition to the paintings, lithic tools have also been found scattered throughout the site, and several tombs have been marked with stelae and mounds.

There are approximately 20 rock shelters with paintings, the largest measuring approximately 10 meters in length. The majority of them appear to be humpless cows with curving horns and marked udders (sometimes with reddish tips). After visiting the site, we will return to Hargeisa city and visit the nearby camel farm. Overnight in Hargeisa at Damal hotel or similar.

Day 5:HARGEISA - JUBA

Fly into Juba, the capital of South Sudan. Your guide will meet you at the airport and transfer you to the hotel. If you have time according to your arrival time in Juba, spend the rest of the day exploring the Konyo-Konyo market. Dinner at a local restaurant and overnight in Juba at Royal Palace Hotel.

Day 6:Juba - Mundari Camp

After breakfast at the hotel, visit Juba University, which was established in 1975 to provide higher education for the southern areas of Sudan. This is an excellent opportunity to meet some of South Sudan’s most talented students. Discover Jubek’s Tomb – Jubek is an important figure of the Bari community, whose history has been marked by many underlying tensions. As a result of Jubek’s high reputation in the country, the capital has been named in his honor.

Take a look at Konyo Konyo, the largest market in South Sudan. It is an amazing place where South Sudan’s diverse ethnicities mix.

In the afternoon, we depart for Mundari camp. The driving time differs, as the Mundari move their camp around with them from place to place. The drive can take anywhere from 15 minutes to three hours. On the way, you will stop at small villages for photo opportunities and then proceed to a Mundari settlement, where the village chief will personally grant you access to the local community. One of the highlights of this trip is when the herders return to the village with their livestock in masses by sunset and begin preparing them for the evening meal. It will be an atmospheric experience to be surrounded by the mist created by the smoke the Mundari prepare to repel mosquitoes. It is a pleasure and a lot of fun to spend an evening with the Mundari people. Overnight Mundari camping

Day 7:Mundari - Juba - Airport transfer

In the morning, we recommend waking up early to view or partake in the preparation of cattle for the day ahead by the herders. There is no doubt that morning is the busiest time of the day for locals. If you need assistance with any chores, please do not hesitate to ask.

Return to Juba and the day will conclude with airport drop-off due to catch up your international flight and tour ends transfer to the airport.
