Tours from Khartoum to Northern Sudan in 3 days are the best way to explore the Pyramids and the capital city of Sudan, as well as the many historical and cultural attractions there, such as ancient pyramids, temples, and tombs. Naga, Mussawarat, and Meroe are some of the most popular tourist destinations in Northern Sudan.
In addition to providing a glimpse into the country’s rich history, these sites are a good opportunity for visitors to learn more about the ancient Nubian civilization.
Tour of Khartoum & Surroundings starting in the morning, including Khartoum city tour, Jabal Auliya, and Omdurman:
Visit Jabal Auliya, a hill located approximately 15 km east of Khartoum, to begin your day. There are breathtaking views of the city and the Nile River from this location. There are two ways to reach the top of the hill: by car or on foot (if you are feeling adventurous).
Next, proceed to Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, after enjoying the views from Jabal Auliya. To gain a deeper understanding of the country’s history and culture, visit the National Museum of Sudan. Afterwards, visit the Tuti Bridge to witness the confluence of the Blue and White Niles.
After lunch, proceed to Omdurman, which is located just across the Nile from Khartoum. Visit the Omdurman Souq, one of Sudan’s largest and busiest markets. Among the items available here are a variety of traditional Sudanese goods, such as textiles, pottery, spices, and more. You will then visit one of the most important Sufi shrines in Sudan, the tomb of Sheikh Hamad Al Nil.
Upon completion of your tour in Omdurman, you are free to return to your hotel or to the airport if you are departing Sudan.
Following breakfast, you will visit two important archaeological sites in Sudan from Khartoum, Naga and Mussawarat, before proceeding to Meroe to explore its ancient pyramids.
Our first focus will be on Naga and Mussawarat. These sites are located approximately 30 kilometers northeast of Khartoum and are both famous for their ancient temples and ruins. Historically, Naga was the capital of the Kingdom of Meroe and an important cultural and religious center. Mussawarat was also a significant religious site, containing a temple complex dedicated to the worship of Apedemak, the lion god.
In Naga, you will find ruins and structures that are impressive, including the Temple of Amun, the Temple of Apedemak, and the Roman Kiosk. It is believed that the Temple of Amun dates back to the 3rd century BC and was of great importance to the rulers of the Kingdom of Meroe. In the 1st century BC, the Temple of Apedemak was dedicated to the lion god who was revered in the area.
At Mussawarat you will find the remains of a large temple complex, including the Great Enclosure, which was the main temple. The Great Enclosure was surrounded by walls, and many columns and carvings depicted the lion god Apedemak. Additionally, you will be able to see the Temple of the Lion, which is a smaller temple dedicated to Apedemak.
After visiting Naga and Mussawarat, it is time to travel to Meroe. The ancient city was once the capital of the Kingdom of Kush, and it is famous for its impressive pyramids. The pyramids of Meroe were built during the 3rd century BC for the purpose of housing the tombs of the rulers of the Kingdom of Kush.
At Meroe, there are approximately 200 pyramids divided into three groups. The Northern Group consists of approximately 50 pyramids, while the Southern Group contains approximately 20 pyramids. In the Western Group, the number of pyramids is the smallest, with only a few remaining. Several of the pyramids can be explored on foot, as well as climbed to the top for an outstanding view of the surrounding area. Overnight in Meroe camp or outdoor camping.
The tour will begin in Meroe where we will explore the impressive pyramids of the city before moving on to Khartoum, the Sudanese capital. We will pass through beautiful and varied landscapes in Sudan, including deserts, mountains, and fertile valleys.
Lastly, if time permits, we will have the opportunity to explore the local markets and sample some of the Sudanese cuisine, which is noteworthy for its spicy flavors and use of locally sourced ingredients. Overnight in Khartoum at the New Flower hotel.
