Overview

Tour Details

In recent years, Eritrea has been lazily compared to North Korea in Africa. The answer is no, I believe. Although this proud nation state lacks the political freedoms that seemed so precious at independence, it has much more to offer than its current isolationist leadership. It is fascinating to witness the colonial architecture and cultural heritage of Asmara, as well as the jarringly different feeling of Keren, which today is more influenced by the Sudan than Italy.

Massawa, which has access to the Red Sea, is Eritrea’s future. It is difficult to imagine the future even with stifling humidity and languid decay. Eritreans desire change while acknowledging their debt to the heroes of the War of Independence. As a result of the process of rapprochement with Ethiopia, the conflict has officially ended.

We offer tours in Eritrea and in combination with other countries in the Horn of Africa. Through these tours, travelers will have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of one of the world’s most proud, resilient, and historically fascinating nations.

In addition to being one of the world’s best preserved examples of Art Deco architecture, Asmara is also one of the most incongruous places on earth. Dahlak Islands offer excellent diving and fascinating marine life, while Red Sea towns such as Massawa provide a glimpse of Ottoman heritage.

Itinerary

Day 1:Arrival in Asmara

Upon arrival at Asmara International Airport, you will be assisted with customs formalities and transferred to your hotel. A tour of Asmara will be conducted in the afternoon, depending on the time of your arrival. It may be possible for the tour guide to guide visitors to some of the fascinating and exciting sights in Asmara, depending on the amount of time available. Overnight in Asmara at the Star hotel or similar one.

Day 2:Asmara - Massawa

In the morning, we will start our journey to Massawa by visiting some of the most popular attractions in the area. Having driven from Asmara in the direction of the east, we then head to Massawa by way of the Massawa – Nefasit route. It takes about three hours for Massawa to reach a height of 2400 meters above sea level. It will be a journey through three different types of climate zones along the way – cold, temperate, and hot. Ghinday is the perfect place to take a short break for a cup of coffee during your busy day. In order to reach Massawa, we have to make a few stops first. Overnight in Massawa at Dahlak hotel or a similar.

Day 3:Massawa - Keren

After breakfast, we will visit some of Massawa’s most unusual and interesting sites. Architects in Massawa are Turkish and Italian, representing the colonial histories of the Ottoman Empire and the Italian Empire. The Old Turkish Palace and the Modern Port were built by the Titians at the turn of the 20th century, respectively. Both attractions are very popular with tourists. We depart for Keren in the late afternoon. Overnight in Keren at Sarina hotel or similar.

Day 4:Keren - Asmara

The morning will be spent visiting the splendid camel market, where local tribesmen sell their animals. During World War II and the Eritrean War of Independence, Keren was a site of heavy fighting. The Sudanese influence can be seen in the way people dress, their language, as well as their food, which is excellent, especially the aromatic Sudanese tea.

Our visit to Keren will include a viewing of the WWII graves of British and Commonwealth troops who defeated the Italians here at a significant cost. In the Italian cemetery, we will find the graves of men who were killed in the process of making and defending the colonial project. We will depart Keren in the afternoon and travel to Asmara. Overnight in Asmara at Top Five hotel or a similar.

Day 5:Asmara city Tour - Airport drop-off

On your final day, you will depart from Asmara. If you have some time before your flight, we recommend visiting the local markets to buy some souvenirs or trying some Eritrean cuisine. Eritrean cuisine is delicious, and some of the must-try dishes include injera, tsebhi, and shiro.
