Tour Details

This 5 days tour of Lalibela and Eastern Ethiopia takes you to some of the most beautiful and historically significant locations in the world, combining Christian and Islamic traditions. You will have the opportunity to explore the cultural and historical sites of Ethiopia! Lalibela, with its ancient rock-hewn churches, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an architectural marvel.

The city of Dire Dawa is renowned for its colorful markets and bustling city life, which is a unique blend of Islamic and Christian cultures. There is a hyena feeding ritual in Harar, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is famous for its walled city, traditional houses, and hyena feeding rituals. A border town with Somaliland, Togwajale forms an important trade route between Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa.

Itinerary

Day 1:Addis Ababa - Lalibela

As soon as you check in for your flight to Lalibela at 6:00AM and arrive at 9:45AM, you will spend the remainder of the day exploring the first group of the three monolithic cave churches that comprise this 13th century ‘New Jerusalem’. Upon completion of sightseeing at Lalibela. Overnight in Lalibela at your assigned hotel.

Day 2:Full day Lalibela tour

We will be traveling to the Yimrihana Kristos Church located 40 kilometers east of Lalibela at 7:30 in the morning. After your visit, you will return to Lalibela for a visit to the second and third groups of churches in the afternoon. Overnight in Lalibela at the assigned hotel.

Day 3:Lalibela - Fly to Dire Dawa

In the morning at 8:30 AM, you will be heading to the airport in order to take your flight to Addis Ababa. If time permits, on the way, you will visit the cave monastery of Neakuto Leab. The tour of Lalibela to North Ethiopia will conclude with check-in for your flight to Dire Dawa. As soon as you arrive in Dire Daw, you will begin your tour of Dire Dawa, which will include a tour of the city’s highlights, including the railway station. Overnight in Dire Dawa at your assigned hotel.

Day 4:Dire Dawa - Harar

After breakfast, you will travel to Harar from Dire Dawa where you will discover the treasures hidden in the narrow alleyways of the UNESCO world heritage site walled city of Harar, which boasts colorful markets, countless mosques and shrines, as well as unique people living in beautifully decorated houses. There are a number of attractions to visit, including the House of Rimbaud, Ras Tafari’s House, Ras Mekonnen’s Palace, the Harari National Cultural Center, and the tomb of Emir Nur, who constructed the famous Jugol wall. As part of this tour, you will also visit a colorful market in Harar city, where ethnic groups such as Hadere, Oromo, and Somali gather together. In the evening, you will visit the hyena man who feeds the hyenas outside the walled city every night. Long ago, this practice was established in order to prevent wild hyenas from hunting for food in the city. Overnight in Harar at your assigned hotel.

Day 5:Harar - Togwajale (Border B/W Ethiopia & Somaliland)

After breakfast, you will travel to Togwajale, the border market between Ethiopia and Somaliland, Somaliland is a country that broke away from Somalia in 1991, but is still unrecognized internationally. Togwajale is one of the largest markets in East Africa. This tour is an excellent option for those who would like to extend their trip to Somaliland and Djibouti, or if you would like to book a combined trip of these three countries as a single tour.

This tour is priced per person.

  • 1 person: $700

  • 2 up to 5 people travelling together: $600 per person

  • 6 up to 12 people travelling together: $550 per person

  • If you are traveling with more than ten people, you will receive a significant discount. Please contact us for more information.

     

    The deposit required to confirm your booking is 10%.

Payment Method

We always advise booking in advance. For confirmation of the tours, we require a 10% deposit payment in advance. This can be done via an online to our Business Bank account in USD. The remaining can be paid upon arrival in cash USD.

However, you can choose to pay the full amount in advance via our Somaliland Business bank transfer. We will always send the invoice with all the banking details.

IMPORTANT: All wiring fees need to be paid by the customer. Visit Horn of Africa cannot be held responsible for the failure of booking due to delay in payment.

Cancellation Policy

If you wish to cancel your booking, the following conditions apply. A deposit payment has to be made to Visit Horn of Africa 30 days before the scheduled departure/beginning of the Tour.

  • 21 days before arrival – 20% of the total tour price will be charged
  • 15 Days before arrival – 40% of total tour price will be charged
  • 7 Days before arrival – 100% of total tour price will be charged

IMPORTANT: The cancellation policy stated above does not apply if a prior agreement has been made with Somaliland Travel Agency.

Change in Itinerary

Visit Horn of Africa tries to follow the agreed tour program with its clients as much
as possible. However, under certain circumstance, we might need to change the program
due to: Road conditions, safety, adverse weather conditions, civil war, strike, cancellation
or delay of domestic flights, high-level government meeting.

Refund

In the case where Visit Horn of Africa does not provide one of the services
mentioned in the program, we will provide a refund for the services not rendered, except
in the following cases:

  1. Cases of force majeure, adverse weather conditions, cancellation or delay of domestic
    flights, civil war, strike, road conditions, high-level government meeting.
  2. Change in Itinerary by Somaliland Travel Agency if we judge that the context endangers the safety of the customer.

Domestic & International Flights

A delay or cancellation of scheduled flights is not the responsibility of Visit Horn of Africa. We will, however, provide all the necessary assistance to our customers in such circumstances. All airfares are subject to availability at time of booking. Please also note that fares are subject to change without notice and are not guaranteed until purchased.
