Overview

Tour Details

A Harar tour would include the walled city of Harar, with its narrow alleyways and colorful buildings, along with a bustling market. Harar is famous for its nightly hyena feeding ritual, in which locals feed raw meat directly from their mouths to the hyenas.

Among Harar’s mosques are the Jami Mosque, one of Ethiopia’s most beautiful, considered the fourth-holiest city in Islam. The Harari Museum displays artifacts, textiles, and photographs illustrating the cultural and religious history of the Harari people. In Harar, coffee is a significant part of the culture. Harar produces some of the finest coffee in the world. Local coffee plantations can be visited and traditional coffee making can be learned.

UNESCO has designated Harar Jugol as one of the World Heritage Sites and the site includes 82 mosques, including three that date back to the 10th century, along with more than 100 shrines and tombs.

In Harar, Muslims, Christians, and indigenous traditions blend together to create a rich cultural heritage. When visiting mosques or other religious sites, visitors should respect local customs and dress modestly. Upon returning to Addis Ababa or before departing to Togwajale, the border crossing to Somaliland, you will visit local coffee shops since Harar is known for its coffee, which is considered some of the best in Ethiopia.
